ANON Second half of C19th Watercolour on paper approx 24.5 cm x 20 cm for the image, 33 cm x 28.5 cm framed. A naïve naval scene showing officers, midshipmen sailors and marines on deck. A variety of uniforms depicted which might help to date the unsigned work more closely. Later framing, some damage to the top edge centre and with a closed tear in the left corner of the sail. A lively image. In the centre a marine salutes naval officers. To the right a seaman looks out of the picture at the viewer [ possibly a portrait of a ship mate or the maker of this work?] whilst officers of all shapes and sizes and young midshipmen, converse on deck. It might well be that the characters are actual portrait caricatures of those on board and were intended to be recognised by fellow shipmates. An entertaining naive image.
