C17th oak carving in the round of a female figure, possibly depicting a Native American woman. Mounted on what looks to be a later plinth, some restoration to the left arm and breast, old worm damage evident but now stable. Approx 31.5 cm x 15cm x 9 cm. There is evidence that the carving was once a newel post or part of furniture, as the top of the piece has been sawn off and a locating hole filled with wax. The figure is naked with long hair and some form of headdress, possibly depicting a Native American woman, or a more common Caryatid. A striking figure which was carved to be seen in the round rather than being applied flatvto a piece of furniture. We think that the carving is English. The restoration, presumably to replace old worming in sap wood, has been well done. There is also a small loss to the nose of the figure.
